Get Your Employees Moving on Get Fit Don’t Sit Day

According to the World Health Organization1, lack of physical activity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. The World Health Organization2 also reports that globally, approximately 23 percent of adults 18 years and older were not active enough in 2010, and a contributing factor was sedentary behavior in the workplace.

In an effort to help local business owners and their employees stop sitting and get moving, Health Health is offering a day of FREE health and wellness classes at Harken Health Centers in Atlanta and Chicago on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in honor of National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day. On Get Fit Don’t Sit Day, members, non-members and local business owners and employees can visit a nearby Harken Health Center to enjoy classes such as yoga, Zumba or a nutrition class. Classes will run throughout the day.

At Harken Health, we offer businesses a unique model that not only includes insurance, but a source for helping keep your employees healthier through access to a team of Care Providers and Health Coaches at our Health Centers who work with members to help them reach their health goals. Harken Health members receive unlimited, $0 primary care visits to Harken Health Centers. 12-1pm Daily Choices
This class will cover basic nutrition and exercise information along with lifestyle changes to help lower your risk of chronic health problems, improve management of chronic disease, better your health overall, and help you feel more energetic.

Harken Health in Brookhaven

11am-12pm Walking Mindfulness Class
Exercise while learning how to manage anxiety by staying present, engaging in physical activity and being outdoors. Led by Behavioral Health Specialist Emily Garai and Health Coach Fran Clowse.

12-1pm Yoga
Yoga incorporates breathing techniques, deep stretching, light vinyasa work, foundational standing and balancing postures into a low-impact exercise for better health. There is an emphasis on meditation and mindfulness through breath work, toning and strengthening through subtle flowing, and gentle stretching for all the therapeutic benefits of yoga. All levels welcome!

3-4pm Cardio Metabolic Training
This class emphasizes safe and intentional exercises for maximum calorie burn and increased metabolic rate after exercises.

3:45-4:30pm Smoothie Happy Hour
Enjoy a healthy smoothie prepared by Health Coach Fran Clowse and learn how to make your own healthy smoothie recipes at home. Learn about the smoothie’s ingredients and discover what makes it “healthy” as well as how to substitute high calorie/sugar items with healthier options.

9-10am Standing Meditation
Join our Health Coach Morgan McMahon for this class that embraces the simple, powerful mediation stance of standing. Learn how to achieve the standing meditation alignment and practice the position using breath work.

11am-12pm Neighborhood Walk
Partake in a mild pace walk through our local neighborhood with Harken Health Coaches.

12-1pm Yoga
Yoga incorporates breathing techniques, deep stretching, light vinyasa work, foundational standing and balancing postures into a low-impact exercise for better health. There is an emphasis on meditation and mindfulness through breath work, toning and strengthening through subtle flowing, and gentle stretching for all the therapeutic benefits of yoga. All levels welcome!

1-2pm Zumba
Zumba is an aerobic dance fitness program that features movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance, performed primarily to Latin American dance music. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, salsa, belly dance and various aerobic techniques such as squats and lunges, just to name a few! Though it may sound intimidating, no rhythm or previous dance background is required. The Zumba motto is “ditch the workout, join the party!” You only need to bring a willing spirit, teachable attitude, and of course water and comfortable shoes.

3-4pm Chair Exercises
Join Health Coach Joyce Miller, as she leads this class focused on various chair exercises. This class is geared towards helping people in the beginning stages of their fitness journey and will show how to work out while sitting down.

Harken Health in Duluth

10-11am One-Mile Neighborhood Walk
Partake in a mild pace walk through our local neighborhood with Health Coach Carol Thomason and learn about Harken’s upcoming Walking Group.

12-1pm Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet
This 45-minute class shares the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Learn how to meal plan, grocery shop and cook vegetarian dishes. Vegetarian samples will be provided!

2-3pm Barre
This class will focus on postural strength and alignment, followed by a series of upper body exercises using light weights. A barre chair will be used to do a series of targeted exercises that will sculpt and strengthen your lower body and core.

4-5pm Body Sculpting
This class is designed to increase muscular strength and endurance using a combination of body weight exercises and dumbbells. After a few classes, you may find you look and feel better.

There is an emphasis on meditation and mindfulness through breath work, toning and strengthening through subtle flowing, and gentle stretching for all the therapeutic benefits of yoga. Bhangra is fusion of music and dance which originates from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. In its earliest form it was a celebratory folk dance which welcomed the coming of spring, or Vaisakhi, as it is known.

1-2pm Walking
Partake in a mild pace walk through our local neighborhood with Harken Health Coaches.

2-3pm Zumba
Zumba is an aerobic dance fitness program that features movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance, performed primarily to Latin American dance music. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, salsa, belly dance and various aerobic techniques such as squats and lunges, just to name a few! Though it may sound intimidating, no rhythm or previous dance background is required. The Zumba motto is “ditch the workout, join the party!” You only need to bring a willing spirit, teachable attitude, and of course water and comfortable shoes.

This class is designed to be an introduction to strength and cardiovascular training. Members will be instructed on correct movement and led through a 45 minute workout using resistance bands, light weights, and body weight to stress and strengthen muscles. This class also incorporates short cardio intervals to build cardiovascular endurance.

4-5pm Stretching
Members will learn effective and safe stretching techniques, postural training and self mobilization techniques to relieve musculoskeletal tightness, adhesions and pain. The class will incorporate active static stretching as well as self mobilization modalities such as a STM ball and foam roller.

Harken Health in Edgewater

11am-12pm Beach Walk

Qi Gong Is a holistic system of coordinated body posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used for health, spirituality, and martial arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, philosophy, and martial arts, Qi Gong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi).

2-3pm Fuel Your Brain & Body (Smoothies)
Join us for a healthy treat as we host Smoothie Happy Hour in Edgewater!

3-4pm Strong Healthy Bodies
This class is designed to be an introduction to strength and cardiovascular training. Members will be instructed on correct movement and led through a 45 minute workout using resistance bands, light weights, and body weight to stress and strengthen muscles. This class also incorporates short cardio intervals to build cardiovascular endurance. This is an introductory class for members who are interested in learning basic knowledge in exercise routines. This class will have an emphasis on technique instruction and building strong healthy bodies.

4-5pm Art Class
This circuit is for ages 4 and up. Kids will participate in hula hooping, hop scotch, and jumping jacks. It’s a great way to get moving while participating in fun activities with great music.

12-1pm Salsa Session 2
